Eligibility Frequently Asked Questions

Question #1: What must a student-athlete do to be eligible to particpate in organized practice and/or competition?
Answer #1: A student-athlete must meet the requirements set forth under Bylaw 14.1.7 Full-Time Enrollment.
14.1.7.1 Requirement for Practice or Competition. To be eligible for practice or competition, a student-athlete shall be enrolled in at LEAST a minimum full-time program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree as defined by the institution, which for purposes of this bylaw and its subsections shall NOT be less than 12-semester or -quarter hours, regardless of the institution's definition of a minimum full-time program of studies
  • Must meet institutions admission requirements
  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student as stated above
  • Must follow the 10-Semester/15-Quarter rule specified by the NCAA

 
14.1.7.1.1 Drop/Add Course. A student-athlete no longer shall be considered enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies (after dropping a course that places the student below full-time status) when the dropped course becomes official in accordance with the procedures determined by the institution for all students. A student-athlete who is adding a course to reach full-time status shall become eligible for practice and competition once the course has been approved by the appropriate department head (or designated representative) and submitted to the register.
  • If registered as a full-time student with 12 credit hours and are in the process of dropping a class, please add another course to stay above the minimum full-time program before you drop the class.


Question #2: What are the academic eligibility requirements I must follow each year?
Answer #2:
24-hours: A student-athlete must complete a minimum of 24 credit hours of academic credit prior to the beginning of the second year of enrollment.
18-hours: A student-athlete must complete a minimum of 18 semester hours of academic credit during each regular academic year.
Six-hours: A student-athlete must complete a minimum of six-semester hours of academic credit in the previous full time regular academic term.


Question #3: What is the policy regarding a student-athletes final semester/quarter with athletic eligibility remaining?
Answer #3: A student-athlete must meet the requirements set forth under Bylaw 14.1.7.1.7 Exceptions.
14.1.7.1.7.3 Practice or Competition-Final Semester/Quarter. A student-athlete with athletics eligibilty remaining may compete or participate in organized practice sessions while enrolled in LESS than a minimum full-time program of studies, provided the student-athlete is enrolled in the final semester or quarter of the baccalaureate program and the institution certifies that the student-athlete is carrying (for credit) the courses necessary to complete the degree requirements.
 
  • May compete if enrolled in lesss than full-time during student-athletes final semester/quarter of their undergraduate degree program.
  • Must register for graduation with the institution's register office
  • Must meet all graduation requirements
  • Must meet Progress-Towards Degree Requirements
  • Institution must certify that student-athlete is carrying credits necessary to complete graduation requirements
